About

Quick facts: The 17th-century canal was dug by Swedish prisoners of war during the Dano-Swedish wars. Colorful gabled houses line the waterfront, with the oldest house dating to 1681 at number 9.

Highlights: Most visitors never notice the tiny, privately-owned Christmas market shop at number 20 that operates year-round, hidden behind an unassuming red door. Hans Christian Andersen lived at three different addresses along the canal (numbers 18, 20, and 67) and wrote some of his most famous fairy tales while staying here.

Insider tips

  • Bring comfortable shoes because the paved promenade is slippery when wet.
  • The best photo spot is the bridge at the end of the canal, from which you get a view of the entire row of houses.
  • Skip the restaurants right by the water; the prices are higher and the quality is poorer than in the streets behind.
  • Visit on a weekday before 10 AM to avoid tourist groups.
