Best time to visit

Early spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant climate for walking, and weekday mornings have the fewest visitors so you can quietly talk to the hosts in costumes.

Budget tips

Combine your visit with nearby attractions through joint tickets that offer discounts for multiple museums. Children up to a certain age enter for free, and family tickets are significantly cheaper than individual ones.

About

Quick facts: More than 25 historic buildings were relocated here from across the island of Funen, each carefully dismantled and reconstructed piece by piece. Livestock like horses, goats, and chickens roam the grounds, and the staff wears traditional 19th-century costumes while doing period-appropriate chores.

Highlights: Around the dinner table inside the 1850s farmhouse, volunteers still cook over an open hearth using recipes from the 1800s, filling the room with wood smoke and the scent of rye porridge. You can taste the warm, smoky stew straight from the iron pot if you time your visit right, an experience no glass display can match.

Insider tips

  • Bring comfortable walking shoes because the paths are dirt and uneven, and the entire grounds are toured on foot.
  • You get the best photos during the golden hour in the afternoon when the sun passes through the branches of old fruit trees above the houses.
  • Do not skip the bread baking demonstration, it is held only at certain hours so check the schedule at the entrance.
  • Visit the school and the teacher's house early in the morning before the crowd arrives, that is where most of the interactive content is.
