Quick facts: With a diameter of about 3 kilometers, this volcanic crater lies at an altitude of 3,800 meters in the Andes. The emerald-colored waters have a pH of about 1.5, an acidity so strong that nothing can live in them.
Highlights: Legend says that when a witch was buried in the crater and the earth trembled, the water turned turquoise, so acidic that nothing can live in it. The acidity, like battery acid with a pH of 1.5, leaves nothing alive in the water, and this is what gives its color such an intense glow.
