About
Quick facts: Roughly 500 years old, this Inca complex is the largest known archaeological site in Ecuador. Unlike many Inca sites, its oval-shaped Temple of the Sun was built around a massive natural rock rather than carved from one.
Highlights: The Temple of the Sun is aligned so precisely that during the June solstice, sunlight streams through a doorway and illuminates the central rock perfectly. Local Cañari people originally inhabited this land generations before the Incas arrived, and their influence lives on in the site's unique curved construction style that blends both cultures.

- The guided tour is worth the extra few dollars , without one you'll miss context about the Cañari-Inca fusion architecture.
- Wear sturdy shoes with grip; the original stone steps are uneven and can get slippery after rain.
- Arrive when gates open at 8 AM , you'll have the site nearly to yourself before buses roll in around 10:30 AM.
- Skip the on-site restaurant and bring snacks instead; the nearby town of Ingapirca has better and cheaper almuerzos (set lunches).
