About
Quick facts: Around 1,100 animals across roughly 200 species call these grounds home, spread over more than 75 hectares. The 2015 flood disaster reshaped the zoo's history, with some animals actually swimming out into the city streets before being recovered.
Highlights: After the 2015 flood, keepers trained the surviving predators using positive reinforcement, and several bears now voluntarily step onto scales and present paws for blood draws. The white lion pride, one of only a handful in the Caucasus region, has grown two cubs born right here since the rebuild.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy walking shoes because the zoo is spread across steep slopes and the paths get slippery after rain.
- Head to the big cat enclosures around 11 AM when keepers do feeding demonstrations that draw attention.
- The reptile house is easy to skip if you have limited time; the open-air mammal exhibits and aviary are the real payoff.
- Bring water and snacks since food options inside are limited and overpriced; there are picnic tables near the entrance.
