Quick facts: Stretching 102 meters across the wall of Dresden's royal palace, this porcelain procession features 93 life-sized figures on roughly 24,000 Meissen porcelain tiles. Each figure represents a Wettin ruler or notable figure, marching chronologically from the 12th century through the early 1900s.
Highlights: Most visitors don't notice that the ceramic tiles actually survived the 1945 firebombing of Dresden virtually intact, while the entire palace around them collapsed. The tiles only needed a gentle cleaning with water to remove soot, emerging as one of the few original pre-war surfaces still visible in the city today.
Insider tips
- Bring a zoom lens or use your phone's zoom to spot the tiny gold-leaf accents on individual tiles that you'd miss with the naked eye.
- Stand at the far left end (Neumarkt side) first to see the figures in chronological order from oldest to most recent.
- Skip midday visits in summer when tour groups crowd the narrow sidewalk in front of the mural.
- Combine this with the nearby Royal Palace tour to see the original Renaissance architecture that matches the figures shown on the tiles.
