About
Quick facts: Rising at the western end of Sanssouci Park, this massive 1769 palace features over 200 rooms and was Frederick the Great's grand statement of Prussian power. Its 400 sandstone statues lining the roofline give it a theatrical, almost playful silhouette that contrasts with its political message.
Highlights: Frederick the Great deliberately designed the New Palace to look far more opulent than it actually was, using painted stucco to mimic marble and fake stonework to create the illusion of wealth after the Seven Years' War. The Grotto Hall is lined with millions of seashells, minerals, and gemstones embedded directly into the walls, creating a shimmering underwater effect that feels utterly unlike any other room in Europe.
Insider tips
- Skip the guided tour if you prefer roaming at your own pace, the audio guide covers the same highlights.
- Look up in the Marble Gallery, the ceiling fresco creates an extraordinary 3D illusion of open sky.
- The Royal Kitchen tour (included with your ticket) is easily overlooked but shows incredible 18th-century copper cookware and roasting spits.
- Arrive by 10am on weekends to beat the biggest school group crowds.
