Quick facts: Wartime air raids flattened so many buildings that their rubble raised this ridge by about 40 meters. Nearly 1.5 million cubic meters of debris now cap the 511-meter summit, with broken stair steps and window frames poking through the soil.
Highlights: Look down at your feet as you reach the plateau and you'll spot carved balustrades and colonnade pieces that once fronted grand city buildings. The top is crowned with a cross placed in 1954, and trails through the gray rubble are flecked with red bricks and shattered window glass.

- Wear grippy shoes, since the upper paths are steep gravel that turns slick after rain.
- Take binoculars to identify the TV tower and other distant landmarks from the summit.
- Come with a local friend who can point out which rubble chunks came from which bombed neighborhoods.
- Skip the busiest midday hours on weekends and aim for a weekday evening instead.
