About
Quick facts: The forest spans roughly 900 hectares on Stuttgart's western edge, making it one of the largest urban nature reserves in Germany. Two artificial lakes, Bärensee and Neuer See, were created here in the 16th century to supply fish and water to the ducal court.
Highlights: Wild red deer, around 80 of them, roam freely through these woods and have lived here for centuries, giving the reserve its name ("Rotwild" means red game). At dusk you can hear the stags bellowing during the autumn rutting season, an eerie chorus that echoes across the lakes completely within city limits.
Insider tips
- Bring binoculars and visit the high observation platform at the wildlife viewing area for the best deer sightings without disturbing them.
- Wear sturdy boots in autumn and winter, since many trails turn muddy and the forest floor gets uneven.
- Skip the main Bärensee shoreline on sunny weekends and instead follow the lesser-used western loop trail for solitude.
- Rent a rowboat at the Bärensee in summer for a peaceful hour on the water, but book ahead on warm weekends.
