Quick facts: A university town where roughly one in three residents is a student, giving the old quarter an unmistakably youthful energy. The Neckar River bends through the center, and wooden punts called Stocherkähne have been poling students and visitors along it since the early 1900s.
Highlights: Climb the 216 steps of the Hölderlin Tower, where the poet Friedrich Hölderlin spent his final 36 years of madness, and look out over rooftops that have barely changed since his time. On the market square, the astronomical clock on the Rathaus still shows the phases of the moon, and the whole town smells of fresh pretzels and river water by mid-morning.
Insider tips
- Bring good walking shoes because the old town is all cobblestones and steep stairs, especially up to the castle.
- The best photo spot is from the Holzbrücke at golden hour, where the Hölderlin Tower and river reflections line up perfectly.
- Skip the tourist restaurants right on the market square and walk two streets over for half the price and twice the flavor.
- If you want a quieter river experience, rent a kayak or paddleboard at the Neckar island instead of the busier punt tours.
