About
Quick facts: At the top of this limestone rock lives the only wild population of Barbary macaques in Europe, estimated at around 300 individuals. A tunnel stretching over 50 kilometers has been carved inside the rock, making it one of the densest tunnel systems in the world.
Highlights: The macaques are known for lowering the ropes of soldiers patrolling the path, so the army has to guard against them stealing equipment. Visitors often see mothers nursing their young right on the edge of the cliff, just above the waters of the strait.
Insider tips
- Do not carry open bags or plastic bags, the macaques will try to take your food or sunglasses
- Wear sneakers with good grip, the trails are steep and in places slippery from limestone
- Come at sunrise when the rock is almost empty and wild goats can be seen on the cliffs
- Bring a map of the tunnels, it is easy to get lost inside because the corridors look identical
