About
Quick facts: The museum is housed in a five-story building on the island of Flores in Lake Petén Itzá, just a few steps from the main square. Its exhibits trace more than 3,000 years of Mayan civilization history in the Petén region.
Highlights: On the ground floor you will be greeted by an impressive replica of a stela from Tikal with original reliefs that you can examine up close without the crowds of large national museums. The biggest surprise is the ceramics collection, which includes vessels with fascinating hieroglyphic inscriptions that tell the stories of Mayan rulers.
Insider tips
- Bring your camera, but check the photography rules at the entrance, as some exhibits may be protected.
- Combine your visit with a walk around the island of Flores, the museum is within walking distance of all the main points.
- Set aside 30 minutes for the final terrace, from where you have a view of Lake Petén Itzá and the surrounding hills.
- Come before lunch so you have enough time to also explore the rest of the island.
