About

Quick facts: More than 600 painted tombs from the 4th century form this early Christian funerary complex. The frescoes reveal biblical scenes and Christian symbols in an impressive state of conservation.

Highlights: In the Burial Chamber of Saint Peter and Saint Paul you will see frescoes that shine with ocher and red colors as if they had been painted yesterday. One of the tombs contains the oldest known depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus in all of Christian art.

Insider tips

  • Bring a light jacket even if it is hot outside, the underground temperature hovers around 15 degrees all year round.
  • The tomb of Peter and Paul has the best-preserved frescoes; focus on that room if you have little time.
  • Flash photography is prohibited, but with a modern phone in night mode you will get good pictures of the frescoes.
  • First visit the interpretation center upstairs to understand the historical context before going down to the tombs.
