Arrive right at opening time (7 AM) to enjoy the complex before tour groups flood in. October through March offers pleasant weather and clear skies for photography.

Budget tips

Entry costs 35 INR for Indians and 550 INR for foreigners, with no free days. If you plan multiple monuments in Delhi, the 1,000 INR same-day ticket covering ten sites (including Humayun's Tomb and Red Fort) saves money for foreigners.

About

Quick facts: Rising 72.5 meters with 379 spiral stairs inside, its sandstone bands alternate with marble to create a striped silhouette. The tower tilts slightly about 65 centimeters from vertical, yet has survived earthquakes for centuries.

Highlights: Look closely at the first three storeys and you will find Arabic calligraphy carved into the stone, but the top floors switch to plainer marble with simpler decoration, a visible line where builders changed styles mid-project. The iron pillar standing in the courtyard has resisted rust for over 1,600 years, and legend says your wish comes true if you can encircle it with your arms behind your back.

Insider tips

  • Go to the back garden area for a wide-angle shot of the tower without crowds in the foreground.
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID, as security checks are thorough and slow during peak hours.
  • Skip climbing the tower itself; visitors are not allowed past the base level, so spend your time exploring the surrounding Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque ruins instead.
  • Hire one of the official guides near the entrance for around 300-500 INR, or download an offline audio guide to avoid getting lost in the historical details.
