Quick facts: A 1667 coal brazier once blazed on this headland, warning ships long before the present tower was built. The final manned lighthouse in Ireland switched to automatic operation in 1996, closing more than three centuries of keeper duty.
Highlights: Inside the lantern, the massive lens spins on a float that sits in a shallow bath of liquid mercury, so the whole mechanism turns almost silently. On clear nights the beam reaches 23 nautical miles out to sea, a white pulse that passing ships line up on as they approach the bay.
