Highlights: Every Palm Sunday, thousands of Christians reenact Jesus' triumphal entry by walking down the same ancient path from the summit, carrying palm fronds and singing hymns. The 2,000-year-old Jewish cemetery here is still accepting burials, with some families paying premium prices for a spot facing the Temple Mount, believed to be the first site of resurrection.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes: the path down the palm Sunday route is steep, uneven limestone.
- The best photo spot is from the top of the Seven Arches Hotel parking lot, which is free and open to anyone.
- Skip the overpriced shops near the top and buy water from the grocery stall halfway down the hill.
- Arrive before 8 AM to have the panoramic view nearly to yourself before the bus convoys arrive.
