Quick facts: Covering an area of over 6,400 square meters, the interior is almost entirely sheathed in shimmering gold mosaics depicting biblical scenes. Over 100 million individual glass tiles were used to create these mosaics, a project that consumed more than 2,200 kilograms of pure gold.
Highlights: Stand under the central dome and look up: Christ Pantocrator stares back with Byzantine intensity, his right hand raised in blessing, a mosaic composed of thousands of gold-leaf tesserae that catch the shifting afternoon light. The columns supporting the nave are recycled Roman originals, each one a smooth, cool cylinder of granite or marble with a distinct veining pattern, repurposed from ancient pagan temples.

- Arrive when doors open at 8:30 AM to have the entire nave to yourself for nearly 30 minutes before anyone else shows up.
- Climb the roof terraces for a close-up view of the intricate arabesque arches and a panoramic view of the Conca d'Oro valley.
- Don't skip the cloister next door: its 228 twin columns are intricately carved with different motifs and no two are exactly alike.
- Dress modestly (knees and shoulders covered) as this is an active Catholic cathedral, and guards will turn away visitors in shorts or tank tops.
