Quick facts: Michelangelo sculpted this commanding figure as the centerpiece for Pope Julius II's tomb, a project he worked on for four decades though it was never fully completed. The statue's famously horned head comes from a mistranslation of the Bible, where the Hebrew word for "rays of light" was rendered as "horns" in the Latin Vulgate.
Highlights: The real magic happens when you step close enough to see the details in the beard, the veins bulging in the arms, and the intense gaze that legend says Michelangelo himself struck with his chisel shouting "Speak!" The sculpture shows Moses mid-motion, gripping his beard with knotted fingers, frozen right at the moment he's about to rise, which gives the whole figure an electric tension you can feel from across the room.
Insider tips
- Look up at the ceiling frescoes depicting miracles of Saint Peter in Chains, they're often overlooked and beautifully detailed
- Bring a small coin for the donation box to help maintain the church, it's completely optional but appreciated
- The short walk up Via Cavour from the Colosseum metro station takes about 10 minutes and passes some nice cafes for a coffee break
- Skip trying to take a selfie up close, the glass barrier and dim lighting make for poor phone photos, instead photograph the full figure from the side angle.
