Quick facts: Norman fighters raised the first stone walls here barely a millennium ago, and Emperor Frederick II later thickened the fortifications with round towers in the 1200s. Two surviving turrets still stand, while earthquakes and centuries of sea spray have erased the rest.
Highlights: From the eastern tower's base, the drop to the fishing boats below runs close to 100 meters, an unrailed reveal that makes the cliff feel alive under your boots. At sunset, the round tower lines up dead-center with the smoking cone of Stromboli volcano, turning a pile of old stones into a natural astronomical sight.
