Money tips for Turin, Italy

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €40 - €45. Use only the official taxi rank outside arrivals. Meters must be on and the fare to the centre is roughly 40 to 45 euros. Refuse drivers who quote a flat inflated price or who approach you inside the terminal.
  • Best alternative: The GTT SADEM bus line to Porta Nuova or Porta Susa station (€7.50)
  • Validate your ticket in the yellow/orange machines at tram stops, bus doors, or metro gates before or as you board. Metro requires tapping at the entry gate. Failure to validate counts as travelling without a ticket. Fine without a valid ticket: €60.
  • Tipping is not expected. A small tip of 5 to 10 percent is appreciated in restaurants if service was good, but service is usually included. Round up in taxis. Tour guides are the main exception where a tip is common.
  • No coperto (cover charge) is officially practiced in most Turin restaurants, but some list a small service or cover fee on the menu. Always check the menu is priced before ordering. If a cover fee appears, it should be on the menu upfront.
  • Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion at ATMs and card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks. Independent ATM kiosks in tourist areas often add high fees. Check the screen for the fee before confirming any transaction.
