Money tips for Italy

  • Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €45 - €50. Official taxis from Fiumicino to central Rome charge a fixed rate of about 48 EUR. Use the licensed taxi rank outside the arrivals terminal only and refuse any driver who approaches you inside the terminal.
  • Best alternative: Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino to Roma Termini (€14)
  • Validate your ticket in the yellow or blue machines at metro station entrances or on board buses and trams before travel begins. Unvalidated tickets are considered invalid. In many cities contactless bank cards can be tapped directly at metro gates and on buses. Fine without a valid ticket: €105.
  • Tipping is not expected but appreciated. Rounding up the bill or leaving 5 to 10 percent in restaurants is common when service was good. Taxi drivers and tour guides do not expect tips.
  • Many restaurants add a "coperto" (cover charge) of 1 to 3 EUR per person, which must be shown on the menu. A "servizio" or service charge is sometimes added on the bill and is not a tip. Check the menu for prices before ordering, and be cautious of restaurants near main squares that display menus only in English with no prices printed.
  • Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion when prompted at ATMs or card terminals. Prefer ATMs attached to major banks (Intesa Sanpaolo, UniCredit, BNL) over independent or tourist-area machines, which often charge high fees. Inform your bank before travel and carry a backup card.

How we calculate

Stay is a double room shared by two (one room per two travelers). Food assumes two cheap meals, a modest dinner and a coffee on a budget, a cheap lunch, a restaurant dinner, coffee and a drink mid-range and restaurant meals, coffees and drinks in comfort. Transport is a daily public transport allowance, plus taxis in the higher tiers. Sights is an average daily allowance for entry tickets and activities. Everything is per day of the trip; a 3-night trip counts 3 days.

Not included: flights, travel insurance, city tax (usually a few euros per person per night, paid at the hotel), shopping and nightlife.
