Mount Misen Hike
Best time to visit
Early morning or late afternoon on clear days, especially November when autumn foliage turns the Momijidani course crimson and gold. Sunrise from the summit is spectacular, with the island chain glowing in low golden light.
Budget tips
The hike itself is free, but the ropeway from Miyajima costs around 1,100 yen one way or 1,800 yen round trip. Save money by hiking up the Daisho-in course and taking the ropeway down, or pack your own lunch instead of buying at the summit teahouse.

About
Quick facts: The summit rewards hikers with panoramic views over the Seto Inland Sea, a sight that was ranked third in the world by the French travel guide Michelin. Nearly 900 stone steps line the Momijidani course, one of three trails that wind up the 535-meter peak.
Highlights: Hidden among the cedar forest on the upper slopes, wild deer wander right up to the hiking paths, and at the summit a small shrine houses a flame said to have burned continuously since 806 AD. That same fire was used to ignite the Peace Flame in Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park, making this peak a living link to Japan's history of resilience.
Insider tips
- Wear trail shoes with good grip, the stone steps get slick with moss after rain and mornings are dewy.
- The Daisho-in course on the west side is less crowded than Momijidani and passes historic stone statues, choose it for solitude.
- Bring a headlamp if you want to catch sunrise, the trail is dark under thick canopy before dawn.
- Skip the summit restaurant and picnic near the Okunoin shrine instead, the views from there are better and the crowd is thinner.
