Land at New Chitose Airport and take the JR Rapid Airport train (about 40 minutes, around 1150 yen) to Sapporo Station. From there the Sapporo Subway Namboku Line gets you to Susukino in under 5 minutes. Most hostels near Susukino offer early bag drop so you can start exploring before official check-in time.

Head to the tower at the east end of Odori Park. Walk in from Odori Station exit 27, no need for a taxi. The observation deck costs around 1000 yen, but on clear autumn days the view of the park's golden foliage and the mountains beyond is worth it. Check the sky first; if it is overcast, save the money and enjoy the park instead.

Stroll the full 1.5 kilometer length of the park, which runs east to west through the city center. In autumn the zelkova trees turn orange and gold, and there are free benches and lawns throughout. Look for the Sapporo Clock Tower and Hokkaido Government Building at the western end if you want more free sightseeing nearby.

Wander into the area between Susukino and Nakajima Park, where small curry shops cluster along the side streets. Order a chicken or vegetable soup curry with a large bowl of rice. Typical price is 1200 to 1500 yen, and most shops let you pick your spice level from mild to very hot.

Start at Susukino Station and walk the covered arcade streets like Tanukikoji Shopping Street and Susukino's neon-lit lanes. Street food stalls and small izakayas line the alleys. Grab a Sapporo beer from a convenience store and walk, or look for the famous Noria ferris wheel on the roof of the MEGA Don Quijote building for skyline views.

From Sapporo Station take the JR Hakodate Line toward Asahikawa, roughly 90 minutes. Look for the cheaper local train rather than the Limited Express to save money, and buy a bento from Ekiben stalls in the station before boarding.

Arrive early to see the penguin and seal exhibits, known for their glass tunnels that let animals swim directly overhead. Entrance is about 1000 yen, one of the best value attractions in Hokkaido. The zoo is famous for its winter penguin walks, but the autumn crowds are lighter so you can linger at the polar bear and walrus enclosures.

Catch the return JR local train from Asahikawa station back to Sapporo. Time it to arrive by late afternoon so you have the evening free for ramen hunting in Susukino.

Head to Susukino district, Sapporo's entertainment hub south of the station, where ramen shops stay open past midnight. Walk along the main strip and look for any shop with a queue of locals, then order Sapporo Miso Ramen with corn and butter.

Take the JR Hakodate Line local train from Sapporo Station to Otaru Station. A 35 minute ride costs about 750 yen one way. Sit on the left side for ocean views over Ishikari Bay.

Walk the 1.1km canal path from Minami-1 to Chuo-5 streets. Free to explore, with old stone warehouses lining the water. Look for the former merchant warehouses converted to museums and shops along the north bank.

Sakaimachi runs parallel to the canal about two blocks inland. Browse the glass workshops and music box museum, both free to enter. Stop at a shop to sample Hokkaido soft serve from a street vendor.

Head to Sankaku Market, right next to Otaru Station. Browse stalls selling uni, ikura, and crab. Grab a seafood donburi bowl for a filling late afternoon meal.

Return to the canal around 5-6pm for gas lamp lighting. Walk from the Temiya line remnant toward the harbor for the classic postcard view as the sky turns orange over the water.

Catch the JR Hakodate Line from Otaru toward Sapporo, then transfer to the Muroran Line for Noboribetsu. The journey takes roughly 3 hours with the transfer in Sapporo. Keep your ticket stub, sometimes JR passes cover this route. Wake up early to catch the 7am train.

Walk the marked boardwalk trails starting at the wooden gate at the end of the main street. The volcanic steam vents and sulfur pools are free to view. Follow the loop to Oyunuma River foot bath for a natural hot spring soak along the path.

Look for a public bathhouse (sento) along the main onsen street rather than the expensive resort spas. Many guesthouses and hostels include access to a small community bath with their stay, so ask at check-in. Bring your own towel to avoid rental fees, and remember to rinse off before entering.

Walk the main dining street near the station for small izakaya bars. Order yakitori skewers and a Sapporo Beer draft to pair with fried tofu or grilled squid. Point at the daily special boards if the menu is in Japanese only. Buds on a budget stay near 2,000 yen with a couple of drinks.

Catch the Limited Express train from Noboribetsu Station to Hakodate, roughly 2 hours and 15 minutes. Book an unreserved seat on the Hakodate-bound service using your JR Pass to save money. Arrive early enough to drop bags at your hostel before exploring.

Walk up the sloping streets from the waterfront toward the old consulate buildings and churches. Look for the red-brick warehouses at Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse, then follow the cobbled lanes toward the Russian Orthodox Church. Search for 'Motomachi' on Google Maps and wander the pedestrian-friendly alleys off the main slope.

Take the Mount Hakodate Ropeway from the base station near the Motomachi area to the summit observatory. Time your ride so you arrive about an hour before sunset. A round-trip ticket is around 1,500 yen, or skip the ropeway down and hike the trail to save money.

From the summit observatory, find a spot along the railing on the west side for the classic crescent-shaped city glow view. Sunset timing in autumn is around 4:30-5:00 PM, so arrive early to claim a position. Check wind conditions before heading up, as summit warmth can be limited in October.
