Quick facts: Cherry trees line a two-kilometer canal path that follows a canal built in the 1600s to power rice mills and water gardens. The walk connects two of Kyoto's most important temples and passes under low-hanging willow branches that brush your shoulders as you go.
Highlights: At the northern end, a tiny wooden bridge marks the spot where a 19th-century geisha legend supposedly threw her favorite mirror into the canal after losing her love. On spring mornings, falling cherry petals accumulate on the water's surface so thickly they look like pink snowdrifts floating downstream.

- Start at the southern end near Ginkaku-ji and walk north toward the quieter, less crowded stretch of the path.
- The tiny side street just behind the main canal path has a hidden bamboo grove that most tourists walk right past.
