Best time to visit

In the first light of the day (06.30-10.00) you will see the elephants at their most active and the peak before the clouds hide it. During the dry period between June-October and January-February, crossing the salt flats on foot is much easier.

Budget tips

Daily entry for foreign adults is approximately 60 dollars; a two-day ticket costs less than two separate daily fees, and the child fee is reduced by half. Buy your water and snacks in the city, the kiosks at the park gate sell for nearly half the price of the ones inside.

About

Quick facts: In this basin where around 1,500 elephants roam freely, the 5,895-meter snow-covered peak rises like a crimson curtain in the first light of morning. When the salty bed of the drying lake is covered by rains, hundreds of flamingos feed in the puddles, while the spring waters on the lakeshore attract zebras and gazelles.

Highlights: Every member of these elephant families, observed by Cynthia Moss for half a century, is known by name and their family trees are documented, so you can learn on the spot how old the female in front of you is. Beyond the salty ground cracking beneath your feet, the peak's meltwaters seep underground and surface as noisy hot springs, and on the banks of that water, elephants bury themselves in mud and roll around with delight.

Insider tips

  • Arrive at the gate at dawn, the elephants appear at their most active moment and the peak is cloud-free.
  • Take a short walk to the observation hill, the widest photo frame of the salt flat is captured from there.
  • In the midday heat, look for the elephants in the wetlands by the lake shore, a few kilometers of routes off the main road will take you away from the crowds.
  • Hiring a local guide both provides direct income to the community and teaches you to read animal behavior.
