Quick facts: The walls of the Serbian Orthodox monastery built in the 14th century are covered with more than 2,000 unique frescoes. The church was consecrated by our King Saint Stephen, and it is also on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Highlights: The frescoes dating from 1321, which cover almost the entire interior walls of the church, tell the stories of the Bible as if they were the pages of a medieval comic book. The eyes of the "Christ Pantocrator" depiction under the dome seem to follow the visitor's gaze depending on the lighting conditions.
Insider tips
- Women must wear a headscarf and a long skirt, which can also be borrowed on site.
- Photography is allowed, but without flash, because it damages the 700-year-old frescoes.
- In the small shop in the monastery courtyard you can also buy locally made icons and honey.
- It is worth bringing a flashlight, because the small details of the frescoes are hard to see in the dim light.
