Best time to visit

Visit in the morning right after opening (around 9-10 AM) to beat tour groups that swarm the Caravaggio room from midday onward. Weekday visits are noticeably quieter than weekends.

Budget tips

The combined ticket with St John's Co-Cathedral costs about €15 and is worth it since the Caravaggio hangs in the cathedral's oratory. Students and seniors get discounted entry, and the Malta Heritage Pass covers both venues if you plan multiple sites.

About

Quick facts: The museum houses Malta's national collection of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art inside a restored 16th-century Auberge de Provence. Its centerpiece is Caravaggio's Beheading of Saint John the Baptist, one of the only two Caravaggio paintings signed by the artist himself.

Highlights: Caravaggio painted the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist directly onto the wall of the Oratory of St John's Co-Cathedral, and it still hangs there today. What most visitors miss is that the artist signed his name in the blood pooling beneath the saint's neck, a shocking detail scrawled in the crimson paint.

Insider tips

  • Head straight to the oratory for the Caravaggio first, before crowds gather and before your eyes tire of so much gold
  • The audio guide adds roughly 45 minutes but brings the Knights of Malta history to life, skip it if you're short on time
  • No photography is allowed inside the oratory, so put your phone away and just look, you won't regret it
  • Dress modestly since the cathedral and oratory are active religious spaces
