Quick facts: One of Oman's oldest forts, it sprawls across a 12-acre site with 55 towers and stretches of wall that snake over 7 kilometers. Locals say the fort was built by a jinn (spirit) named Bin Ras al-Ghul at the request of a tribal leader, a story still told by village elders today.
Highlights: Deep inside the fort's quiet chambers, you can still see the original wooden beams carved with intricate Quranic verses and geometric patterns, untouched for centuries. The fort's walls were built using a special mixture of mud, straw, and crushed date stones that give them a warm, honey-colored glow at sunset.

- Wear closed-toe shoes; the steep, uneven stairways between towers can be slippery with fine desert dust.
- The small museum inside has a fascinating model of the original fort layout, study it first to orient yourself before exploring.
- Ask the caretaker to unlock the upper terrace, most visitors miss the panoramic views from the highest tower.
- Bring water and a hat, there's very little shade once you climb above the wall level and the sun reflects off the mud brick.
