Quick facts: Six cable cars glide 1,200 meters along the Douro River, lifting passengers 60 meters above the water for panoramic views of Porto's historic hillside. The route connects the Cais de Gaia riverfront directly to the upper-level Jardim do Morro, saving visitors 15 minutes of steep uphill walking.
Highlights: At sunset, the gold-tiled rooftops of Porto catch fire in orange light while the cable cars float silently above the river traffic, a view you can't get from street level. Each cabin offers a glass floor section, so you can watch the riverfront and port wine cellars shrink beneath you as you ascend.
Insider tips
- Request the front cabin for unobstructed forward views through the glass floor.
- Snag a window seat on the left side of the car for the best angle on Porto's cathedral and old town.
- Combine your ride with a visit to Jardim do Morro at the top station for a free panoramic terrace.
- Avoid midday in summer when the glass cabins turn into greenhouses and queues stretch 30+ minutes.
