Council Square (Piața Sfatului)
Best time to visit
Weekdays early in the morning or late in the evening, when the square is free of tourist crowds and you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. December is worth a visit because of the Christmas markets that light up the square with thousands of lights.
Budget tips
The square itself is free to walk around. Entry to the Brașov History Museum in the council tower costs about 10 lei (2 euros), I recommend withdrawing cash in advance, because local ATMs charge high fees.

About
Quick facts: Witch executions once took place here, and on the pavement you can still find a stone marking the spot where the pillory once stood. In the middle of the square stands the 15th-century Old Town Hall building, adorned with a clock tower and colorful roofs.
Highlights: Beneath the pavement of the square lies a network of medieval passages that once connected the town hall to the surrounding houses and served as an escape route. Every summer, music fills the historic center during the Musica Brixiensis festival, when the entire square turns into one big stage.
Insider tips
- Restaurants and cafés on the ground floors of buildings have more affordable menus than those with terraces directly on the square.
- The best photo is taken from the alley leading to the Black Church, from where the square is visible in all its beauty.
- Avoid the main entrance to the town hall; on weekdays the side entrance at the back of the building is open.
- On Tuesday mornings the square is at its quietest, because most tour buses arrive only after lunch.
