About
Quick facts: Standing 64 meters tall, this tower was once part of the city's medieval fortifications. The ropemakers braided their ropes in the covered gallery at the top, using the height to twist the fibers over a long distance.
Highlights: As you climb the 175 wooden steps that creak beneath your feet, you cross five centuries of intact artisanal history. The summit reveals a 360-degree view of the colorful rooftops of Sighișoara and the green hills of Transylvania, a spectacle that the 17th-century ropemakers admired every day.
Insider tips
- Arrive right at opening time at 9am to have the tower almost to yourself before the influx of groups.
- Wear non-slip shoes: the old wooden steps are worn and can be slippery.
- The best photo angle is from Citadel Square, right below, to capture the full height of the tower.
- Skip the souvenir shop at the entrance and treat yourself to a glass of palincă at the nearby cafe instead.
