About

Quick facts: Three massive stone pillars rise 40 meters above the Yenisei River from this hilltop 200 meters above the city. The observation platform offers a panoramic sweep of Krasnoyarsk, the Yenisei, and the surrounding Sayan Mountains on clear days.

Highlights: A seven-minute funicular railway, one of the steepest in Russia, whisks visitors up the 65-degree slope to the top. At night, the 18-meter St. Nicholas Chapel glows gold against the dark sky, visible from almost anywhere in the city below.

Insider tips

  • Walk up the 580-step staircase for free and better photo stops along the way, then ride the funicular down.
  • Late evening on weekdays has almost no crowds, and the chapel lights create dramatic photos from the lower viewing platform.
  • Bring binoculars to spot the Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric dam and the Tatyshev Island bridge from the top.
  • Skip the souvenir stalls at the base and buy snacks at the grocery store down the street instead.
