Before opening at 10:00 AM to photograph the facade without the crowds. Late in the evening in summer, the dome lights up and the reflection on the Moika Canal is spectacular.

The entrance ticket costs about 450 rubles, excluding the climb up the colonnade. On the first Sunday of the month admission is free, but be prepared for long queues.

Quick facts: The golden dome soars to 101.5 meters and is covered with about 100 kilograms of pure gold. Inside you will find over 200 mosaic artworks covering an area of nearly 6,500 square meters.
Highlights: Climbing the 262 steps of the spiral staircase, you reach the panoramic colonnade, from which you can take in the entire historic center with a single glance. No photograph does justice to the feeling of vertigo when you are up there, suspended between the sky and the domes below.
Insider tips
- Arrive 15 minutes before opening to avoid the queue at ticket control, which can exceed 40 minutes.
- Bring a small pair of binoculars: the mosaics of the central vault are very detailed and cannot be fully appreciated from the ground.
- The colonnade is outdoors and windy, so avoid skirts and wide hats that the wind could blow away.
- Skip the guided tour in Italian, which is often too long and boring: an audio guide or an app is more than enough.
