Best time to visit
Early morning hours (08:00-10:00) are ideal; when the lake surface is calm, the sound of the waterfall is heard more clearly and sunlight creates rainbows in the water droplets. The rainy season (September-November) is when the water flow is at its strongest.
Budget tips
The entrance fee is quite low, around 4,000 RWF (about 3 USD). If you hire a local guide, you may pay an additional 5,000-10,000 RWF; you can also explore without a guide.

About
Quick facts: This waterfall, cascading from red cliffs, is the only major natural water source flowing into Lake Kivu and does not lose its flow even in the dry season. The local people believe the water is healing; every August a traditional water festival is held around the waterfall.
Highlights: Behind the waterfall there is a small cave entrance you can walk through behind the thundering water; inside, the air is constantly cool and the sound of water echoes. According to local children, it is believed that deep in the cave an old woman teaches the waterfall a new song every rainy season.
Insider tips
- Wear shoes with waterproof soles against slippery rocks; the ground near the waterfall is always wet.
- You can climb onto the large rock in front of the waterfall and step barefoot into the water, but the rocks are very slippery.
- For the best photo spot, try the wooden platform on the left side of the waterfall; the light looks wonderful from here at sunset.
- On minibuses coming from Kibuye, just say "Ndaba" to the driver before getting off, and they will drop you at the village entrance.
