About

Quick facts: Founded in 1810 to support the local pharmacy and medical school, this botanic garden still houses some of the original medicinal plants. It now holds over 4,500 plant species from Slovenia and across the globe, including 200 that are endangered.

Highlights: Step into the alpine rock garden where 800 species cling to limestone boulders, including the rare Zois' bellflower found only in Slovenian mountains. The garden's 200-year-old Ginkgo biloba tree, planted in the 1820s, changes from deep green to brilliant gold each autumn.

Insider tips

  • Bring a sketchbook or notebook: the garden's labeled plant beds make it a fantastic outdoor classroom.
  • Visit the tropical greenhouse on a rainy day when it feels especially lush and humid inside.
  • Pack a picnic: there are shaded benches near the central pond where you can sit undisturbed.
  • Check the garden's event calendar for guided herb walks that highlight medicinal plants still used today.
