Slovenia is generally safe and honest for tourists, with low violent crime and a solid transport network. The main watch-outs are overpriced taxis without meters, exchange counters near tourist spots with poor rates, and the same common European street scams. Pay with cards where possible and check receipts, especially in Ljubljana's old town.

How it works: Drivers without official authorization approach passengers inside arrivals and quote inflated fixed prices, often without a meter. Fares can be double the fair rate.
How to avoid it: Walk to the official taxi rank outside the terminal and confirm the meter is on or agree a fixed price before departure.
How it works: Exchange offices near main squares and stations advertise no-commission but apply poor buy-sell spreads, costing you significantly on larger amounts.
How to avoid it: Pay by card or use a bank ATM. If cash is needed, compare rates and ask the final euro amount before handing over money.
How it works: Some tourist-area restaurants serve drinks or dishes not on the menu or add service charges without showing them, inflating the bill at the end.
How to avoid it: Confirm prices before ordering, especially for drinks and daily specials, and review the bill line by line before paying.
How it works: Thieves work in groups at busy markets, festivals and on crowded buses, distracting you while lifting wallets or phones from bags and pockets.
How to avoid it: Keep bags zipped and in front of you. Avoid carrying valuables in back pockets in dense crowds.
How it works: Rare cases of rentals shown at a different address or condition than advertised, with hosts demanding cash on arrival or extra fees not in the listing.
How to avoid it: Book through established platforms, read recent reviews, and pay through the platform rather than by direct bank transfer or cash.
Skip street sellers: book official tickets and tours with free cancellation.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU)
Fair taxi price (official, daytime): €35 - €45. Use the official taxi rank outside arrivals and confirm the meter is running or agree a fixed price before starting. Unlicensed drivers approach passengers inside the terminal; ignore them.
Best alternative: Airport shuttle bus operated by the national carrier to Ljubljana bus station (€4.30, about 45 min)
Tipping: Round up in restaurants or leave about 10 percent for good service. Tipping taxi drivers and tour guides is appreciated but not expected.
Cover and service charges: Cover charges are not standard. Check menus for service charges, which must be shown if applied. Avoid places that refuse to show prices.
Prefer ATMs attached to bank branches. Always choose to be charged in euros and decline dynamic currency conversion. Independent street ATMs often carry higher fees.
