Návšteva baziliky Begoña
Best time to visit
Visit early morning (before 11am) on weekdays to experience the basilica in quiet serenity. October through May sees fewer visitors, making the climb up the hill far more pleasant.

Entry to the basilica is free. Donations are appreciated but never expected, and the small museum upstairs costs only 2 euros.

About
Quick facts: The basilica shelters a 14th-century wooden statue of the Virgin of Begoña, known affectionately by locals as "La Amatxu" (the little mother). Pilgrims have climbed the steep Calle Virgen de Begoña hill to reach her for over 500 years.
Highlights: Inside, the Virgin's statue is dressed in real fabric robes that are changed several times a year, a tradition maintained by a dedicated group of local women known as "camareras." During the annual September festival, sailors carry the statue through the streets in a solemn procession, a custom that dates back to when Bilbao's maritime community sought her protection before long voyages.
Insider tips
- Wear comfortable walking shoes for the steep hill climb or take the Artxanda funicular from the old town and walk downhill to the basilica.
- The best photo angle comes from the plaza in front of the basilica at golden hour, when the sun lights up the ornate facade.
- Skip the crowded Sunday masses unless you plan to attend; instead visit during a weekday afternoon to have the nave nearly to yourself.
- Check the schedule for the first October 11 festivities, when the entire neighborhood celebrates with traditional Basque music and dances.
