About
Quick facts: The museum occupies the former home and studio of Joaquín Sorolla, the Valencian painter famous for his luminous beach scenes. Over 1,200 of his works are preserved here, displayed across three galleries and the lush gardens he personally designed.
Highlights: Sorolla planted every tree and shrub in the Andalusian-style garden himself, using the courtyard as both a living palette and an outdoor studio. You can stand exactly where he painted some of his most celebrated works, with the same lemon trees and ceramic fountains still framing the view.
Insider tips
- The garden is free to enter and makes a peaceful spot for a quiet break even if you skip the museum galleries.
- Head to the upstairs rooms first when crowds are low, then work your way down to the popular ground-floor studio.
- No photography is allowed inside the galleries, but you can take photos in the garden and entrance hall.
- The museum shop sells excellent reproductions and postcards at very reasonable prices compared to larger Madrid museums.
