Quick facts: Three distinct garden styles French, English, and Italian merge across its 14 hectares, a rare trifecta in Spanish park design. Below its serene surface lies a Civil War bunker, the PosiciΓ³n Jaca, which served as a command post during the 1936 Siege of Madrid.
Highlights: Deep beneath the flower beds and hedge mazes, a fully preserved Civil War bunker snakes through the earth, its graffiti-scrawled walls whispering stories of soldiers who once planned defensive maneuvers here. The Duchess of Osuna personally oversaw every planting detail in the 1790s, importing rare specimens and even commissioning a faux-ruined temple to evoke romantic melancholy.
Insider tips
- Bring a picnic: shaded lawns near the lake are perfect for lounging, and the on-site cafe is overpriced and limited.
- The hedge maze near the palace is trickier than it looks, allow at least 15 minutes to find the center and back out.
- Photography fans should target the golden hour light filtering through the Exedra colonnade, it creates dramatic shadows on the white stone.
- Skip the guided tour of the Civil War bunker if you're claustrophobic, the tunnels are narrow and dimly lit.
