Quick facts: Sprawled across roughly 2.5 hectares, these gardens occupy the old site of the royal stables. The sunken parterre pond throws a perfect reflection of the palace's western facade, framed by clipped cypress hedges and stately lime trees.
Highlights: Look for the balustrade around the central pond, where four marble kings stand with their backs to the palace, statues originally sculpted in the 1750s for the roofline but never installed up there. On a still morning, the water turns the entire western facade into a wobbly mirror, and you'll likely have it all to yourself.
Insider tips
- Enter from the Cuesta de San Vicente side to skip the palace-facing crowds entirely
- The benches along the central axis get the least foot traffic and the clearest view
- Head to the eastern terrace for an unobstructed shot of the palace dome and the Sierra beyond
- Bring water and a hat in summer, since the open parterres offer little shade
