Quick facts: More than 50,000 objects cram this aristocratic residence, from El Greco canvases to gilded clocks that still keep time. The Marquis left orders that every room stay untouched after 1922, so his theater programs still rest where he dropped them.
Highlights: Step into the ballroom and picture the Marquis gliding in on his private 1911 hydraulic elevator, still caged in original bronze and glass. Everything froze the night he died in 1922, so the dining table stays set for twelve and his handwritten theater notes lie open on the desk.

- Ride the antique elevator to the top floor at opening and wander downward to beat the crowds.
- Frame the mirror-lined ballroom from its doorway so the reflections double the gold without blocking other visitors.
- Wear flat, grippy shoes, the original parquet floors are polished and the staircases run steep and narrow.
