Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales
Best time to visit
Weekday mornings just after opening at 10:00 AM offer the quietest halls. Avoid Monday afternoons when school groups flood the galleries.
Budget tips
General entry costs 7 EUR, with free admission on Wednesdays and Sundays after 4:00 PM (closing at 6:30 PM). The Madrid City Pass or Paseo del Arte card does not include this museum, but students and seniors get reduced rates.

About
Quick facts: Over 6 million specimens fill the collection halls, from dinosaur fossils to glittering gemstones. The museum's star attraction, a 14-meter-long Diplodocus skeleton replica, greets visitors right in the entrance hall.
Highlights: One room holds the skeleton of "Big Bertha," a 40-ton African elephant that once lived in the Madrid zoo, alongside a hauntingly complete Megatherium sloth fossil from Argentina. The whale gallery suspends a 20-meter fin whale skeleton from the ceiling, letting you walk directly beneath Earth's second-largest animal.
Insider tips
- Head straight to the Biodiversity Hall on the top floor first, it's the most impressive and least crowded early in the day.
- Touch the 100-kilo meteorite in the Minerals Hall, it's one of the few exhibits you're actually allowed to handle.
- Skip the crowded ground floor T. rex area on weekends and save it for the last 30 minutes before closing.
- Photography without flash is permitted everywhere, the whale skeleton hall has great lighting around 2:00 PM.
