Best time to visit

Arrive Saturday morning between 9 and 11 a.m. when the market is fully stocked and the energy peaks. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures for browsing the outdoor stalls.

Budget tips

Entry is completely free, and the best deals come in the final hour when vendors discount produce to avoid hauling it back. Skip the tourist-oriented tapas bars and grab a €4 plate of roast suckling pig from the traditional food stalls instead.

About

Quick facts: Holding over 800 years of history, this market has been the commercial heartbeat of the town since the 12th century. Every Saturday morning, the plaza fills with more than 200 stalls selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts.

Highlights: Right in the middle of the market square, a centuries-old stone cross still stands where merchants once sealed deals with a handshake. During the annual fiestas in August, the entire square transforms into an open-air dance floor where locals dance the traditional seguidillas until 3 a.m.

Insider tips

  • Go early to grab a breakfast of churros con chocolate at the stall near the church before the 10 a.m. crowds roll in.
  • Wear comfortable shoes as the cobblestone plaza is uneven and you'll be walking across it multiple times.
  • Look for the ceramic tile numbers above each stall, they've marked the same spots since the 1800s.
  • Bring cash as many of the older farmers and artisan vendors don't accept cards.
