Quick facts: Rising 3,718 meters above sea level, Spain's tallest peak also ranks as the world's third-highest volcanic structure. Its Mars-like terrain has starred in blockbuster films, the last eruption shook the island in 1909, and the park now draws around 4 million visitors yearly.
Highlights: Only one flower, the rare Teide violet, manages to bloom above 3,000 meters on these volcanic slopes. Catch daybreak from the summit and the mountain's shadow stretches into a perfect triangle far out across the Atlantic below.
