Quick facts: A riot of color explodes across its undulating roof, covered in six million ceramic tiles arranged in a giant mosaic. Santa Caterina was Barcelona's first covered market when it opened, and the colorful canopy added in 2005 was designed by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue.
Highlights: Look closely at the market's wavy, multicolored roof from above and you'll see it's not random: the mosaic forms an abstract pattern representing piles of fruits and vegetables, a giant still life visible only from the surrounding buildings. The design incorporates fragments of ceramic plates and tiles sourced from demolished buildings around the city, giving the roof a literal connection to Barcelona's architectural history.

- Bring your own shopping bag: vendors at Santa Caterina are happy to sell to you but don't offer plastic ones with every purchase.
- Find the tiny staircase near the fish stalls that leads to an upper-level terrace with a direct view of the cathedral's dome.
