Quick facts: Each May, over 50 private courtyards fling open their gates for the festival, competing for the title of prettiest patio. The tradition dates to Roman times when houses were built around central courtyards, and today over 3,000 of these flower-filled spaces exist across the old city.
Highlights: Wander through narrow alleyways and suddenly catch the scent of jasmine, orange blossom, and honeysuckle before you even see the doorway. Residents actually live in these homes and will often chat with visitors, proudly explaining their watering routines and how they trained those bougainvillea vines up the whitewashed walls.
