Sir John Soane's Museum
Best time to visit
Weekday mornings right when doors open at 10 AM are quietest. Wednesday evenings during late opening (until 5 PM with candlelit atmosphere in winter) offer a moodier, more intimate experience.
Budget tips
Entry is completely free, no booking required for individuals. Donations are welcome, and the museum shop sells excellent architectural gifts that support the collection.

About
Quick facts: Sir John Soane's own 19th-century home became a museum by an act of Parliament he personally secured, guaranteeing it would stay exactly as he left it. The building holds over 30,000 architectural drawings and 30,000 books, plus a sarcophagus of Pharaoh Seti I that took three days to haul inside.
Highlights: Soane designed the museum itself as a piece of architectural theater: walls swing open to reveal hidden galleries, mirrors multiply candlelight into infinity, and the tiny Breakfast Room feels like stepping inside an optical illusion. You can stand in the Monk's Parlor, a deliberately gloomy chamber he created just to show off how torchlight makes objects look sinister.
Insider tips
- Pick up the free multimedia guide at the ticket desk, it reveals hidden features like the movable wall panels most visitors miss.
- The Picture Room opens its secret flaps on the hour, giving you only 10 minutes to see paintings normally folded away.
- Skip the cafe and head to Lincoln's Inn Fields across the street for a quiet bench under the plane trees.
- Photography is allowed without flash, so the tight spiral staircases and reflecting mirrors are perfect for creative shots.
