Quick facts: The five-story brick building at 97 Orchard Street housed over 7,000 immigrants from more than 20 nations between 1863 and 1935. Its apartments were never updated, so visitors see peeling wallpaper, cast-iron stoves, and narrow hallways exactly as residents left them.
Highlights: You'll literally walk through recreated homes of real families, like the Gumpertz family who lived there during the 1870s, with rooms furnished using artifacts and documents from their actual lives. The 20-minute tours cap at 12 people, so you're standing shoulder to shoulder in the same tiny kitchen where a struggling widow once fed four children on $6 a week.
Insider tips
- Arrive 15 minutes early to browse the museum shop and use the restrooms, since there's no waiting area once your tour starts.
- Take the 'Sweatshop Workers' tour if you want the most emotionally intense and historically deep experience.
- Photography is only allowed in the visitor center, not inside the restored apartments, so save your camera for the gift shop displays.
- Pick the 'Hard Times' tour during warm months, as some floors are not climate controlled and get stuffy.
