About

Quick facts: More than 1,200 plant species from around the world thrive across its 48 acres, including a rare Amazonian water lily whose leaves can support up to 40 pounds. A dedicated team of botanists runs conservation programs here that have saved several endangered plant species from extinction.

Highlights: Deep inside the conservatory, look for the corpse flower named "Morticia" that blooms unpredictably every few years, drawing crowds who come to witness its putrid, meat-like odor. The experience of watching visitors wrinkle their noses while marveling at this 6-foot-tall botanical oddity is strangely unforgettable.

Insider tips

  • Skip the main entrance on weekends before noon when it gets busiest with families and strollers.
  • Bring a picnic blanket for the lawn near the rose garden, one of the quietest spots to relax.
  • Visit the bonsai collection inside the conservatory during late afternoon when the light filters beautifully through the glass.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes; the gravel paths stretch over 2 miles through the grounds.
