About

Quick facts: Stretching over 2,100 acres, Rock Creek Park is twice the size of Central Park. The park's 32 miles of wooded trails follow a creek that flows 25 miles from Montgomery County, Maryland down to the Potomac River.

Highlights: At dawn, the forest floor near Boulder Bridge glows amber as sunlight filters through 200-year-old tulip poplars and American beeches. You might spot a great blue heron standing motionless in the shallow rapids, fishing just meters from the trail.

Insider tips

  • Start at the Nature Center on Military Road to grab a free trail map and see the live animal exhibits.
  • The Western Ridge Trail from Boundary Bridge to Ridge Road offers the steepest climb and the best views over the gorge.
  • Bring waterproof boots after a rain; the muddy sections near the creek stay slippery for days.
  • Skip the parking lot closest to the playground on weekends and use the small lot at Joyce Road instead for quicker trail access.
